Grade 2 Number Sense
In grade two, students are working towards saying the number sequence from 0 to 100 by:
…2s, 5s, and 10s, forwards and backwards, using starting points that are multiples of 2, 5, and 10 respectively
...10s using starting points from 1 to 9
…2s starting from 1
Here are some games to help with these skills:

Grade 2 Mental Math Expectations
By the end of grade 2, students are expected to have their facts to 10, as well as doubles to 9+9 with related subtraction facts memorized (can verbally answer within 3 seconds without the use of their fingers or manipulatives.)
The following are mental math strategies that are taught and practiced in class: Counting On - When adding a 1, 2 or a 3 to a number, we start at the highest number and continue counting. Example: 9 + 2 --> 9.. 10, 11. Counting Back - When subtracting a 1, 2 or a 3 from a number, we start at the highest number and count back. Example: 9 - 2 --> 9... 8, 7. Doubles - When two of the same number are added together such as 5 + 5 or 7 + 7. Doubles +/-1 - When two numbers that are one apart are added together, you double one of them, and either add or subtract the remaining one. Example: 6 + 7 --> 6 + 6 = 12 plus 1 more = 13. OR 7 + 7 = 14 minus 1 = 13. Doubles +/-2 - When two numbers that are two apart are added together, you double one of them, and either add or subtract the remaining two. Example: 3 + 5 --> 3 + 3 = 6 plus 2 more = 8 OR 5 + 5 = 10 minus 2 = 8. Tens Partners - Number combinations that make ten such as 9 + 1 or 6 + 4. Make Ten - When we turn more difficult expressions into expressions equaling 10, then add the "leftovers". Example: 8 + 3 would become 8 + 2 = 10... + 1 = 11. |
